Most of us don't have the information or the skills to compare one life insurance company against another financially. But choosing the right life insurance company is every bit as important as choosing the right type of life insurance coverage. After all, it doesn't do any good to buy life insurance from a company that won't be around when you need them the most.
That's why most consumers look at the independent evaluations of life insurance ratings companies, such as A.M. Best, Fitch, Moody's, and Standard and Poor's. Each provider uses a slightly different method of evaluating the financial strength and claims-paying ability of life insurers, but even so, it's possible to make a comparison between the various life insurance companies in the market today.
A.M. Best is a provider that works exclusively in the insurance marketplace, looking at the strength of an insurance company's balance sheet, performance, and business profile. Companies pay a fee to be rated by A.M. Best, and insurer results are posted on the A.M. Best website. Fitch Ratings uses a number of criteria to determine the financial strength of an insurer, including financial statements, management reports, and company projections. Moody's Investors Service uses other factors, such as market position, product focus, asset quality and profitability to determine their ratings of life insurance companies. And Standard and Poor's looks at an insurer's management team, competitive position, and ability to manage risk.
Looking at the ratings provided by each of the ratings services can give you a very good idea of how strong and stable the insurer that you're thinking of buying coverage from actually is. Another good resource is your state's insurance department. Life insurance companies must regularly provide financial information to the insurance commissioners of the states in which they sell life insurance policies. Your state's insurance office will have accurate and up-to-date information about the life insurance companies that you're considering purchasing from.

The table below gives you an idea of what each of the various ratings mean. Insurance companies are rated by five major rating services. Each service uses its own criteria to issue a "report card" for the companies it rates. Although each service uses an alphabetical rating scale, an A+ from one service may not mean the same as an A+ from another. The following chart lists the ratings available from the five companies and groups them by rating strength.
